9 Mother’s Day Gifts to Help Mom Relax

According to survey results from the American Psychological Association, Americans are more stressed out now than they have been in the past decade, and women (married women, in particular) are more likely than men to report stress symptoms. That means Mom (and the other women in your life) are probably more stressed out than you realize.

To help ease stress, psychologists from the APA study recommend “soothing or pleasurable activities” and “taking care of yourself through proper sleep, diet, and exercise.” This Mother’s Day, give Mom that much-needed pause in her day with these gifts of relaxation, priced for any budget.

$20 and under

Chocolate, $8-12

Bean-to-bar maker Ritual Chocolate out of Park City, Utah is known for their incredibly delicious bars made from cacao beans sourced directly from farmers around the world. Check out the Mid Mountain Blend, or grab a few bars and taste test them together.

HoMedics Sound Machine, $20, Amazon

Help Mom create a soothing environment for sleeping, working, reading, or just relaxing with HoMedics’ sound machine, which has six sound options like white noise, rain, and ocean waves.

Bath bombs, $4.50 and up, Lush

Lush handcrafts arguably the cutest and most original bath bombs for truly relaxing soaks. Some of our favorites include their soothing lavender oil and tonka-infused Twilight bath bomb or the very on-the-nose MOM bath bomb.

Tea infuser, $7, Amazon; Loose tea, $10-22, Teapigs

With this handy manatea (get it?)-shaped infuser, Mom can relax with a cup of her favorite loose-leaf tea anywhere she goes. Pair this with a loose-leaf tea from Tea Pigs, a company that’s won more than 60 Great Taste Awards for their high-quality teas.

$35 to $75

Wine gift box or subscription, $35-$130, Tasting Room

If Mom’s the type to unwind with a glass of wine, she’ll love a gift box or wine subscription from Tasting Room. If you opt for a wine subscription, Tasting Room will send Mom a mini bottle tasting kit and customize future shipments based on the wines she prefers.

Flotation tank session, $60-$75, Various locations

Flotation tanks are specially built tubs filled with warm water and a high concentration of Epsom salts to produce the weightless floating experience that allows your body and mind to completely relax. Aside from giving Mom a unique sensory experience, research suggests that flotation tanks can help lower blood pressure and cortisol levels. Search online for the flotation center nearest to Mom, and arrange for her to drift off to Destination Relaxation.

Harmony yoga mat, $75, Jade Yoga

Whether Mom is a regular at the yoga studio or a more casual practitioner, she’ll appreciate the renowned traction and extra thickness of the Jade Harmony yoga mat. Jade plants a tree for every mat sold (with one million trees planted to date) — a cool stat for Mom to contemplate in savasana.

$100 and up

Car detailing, $100-200, Various locations

Imagine: Mom relaxing while someone else cleans her car’s upholstery, vents, mats, windows, and all of those knobs and crevices in the dashboard! Most independent and chain car washes offer interior and/or exterior cleaning services and can issue a gift certificate. Or better yet, offer to take her car in for the detailing service yourself.

Spa retreat, variable

If you want to give Mom the ultimate relaxation experience and the price is no object, give Travel + Leisure’s Best Desert Spas list or Condé Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice list a peek. We swooned over Miraval in Tucson for its classic Southwest casita rooms and legendary spa services (starts at $569 per night), but also appreciated the all-inclusive packages and total health immersion at Cal-a-Vie near San Diego (three-night packages start at $4,275).

Oh I wish I had seen this sooner, all great ideas! I really like things that are consumable and won't take up space and collect dust. I hope there is one for father's day coming up soon!
